Moving back to India from the UAE, with people who already did it

The Dubai-Sharjah-Abu Dhabi-to-India move is the most common returnee path in our community. They have done the EOSB, the housing, the school switch - ask them.

The UAE-to-India timeline, step by step

You do not need to do everything at once. Here is when each piece actually matters.

  1. T-9 months

    EOSB calculation

    Time departure to maximise gratuity.

  2. T-6 months

    Tasdeeq attestation

Start kids' school document attestation early.

  3. T-3 months

    Bank exit plan

Final salary, loan close, credit card cancel.

  4. T-1 month

    Etisalat / du clean

    Cancel with paperwork. Container booked.

  5. Landing week

    Aadhaar, PAN, schools

April intake fits the UAE calendar perfectly.

  6. T+3 months

    Settle in

EOSB invested, kids in school, home set up.

The boring stuff that bites later

What you actually need to know

What UAE returnees wish they had done 6 months earlier

Calculate your end-of-service benefit (EOSB) and time your departure to maximise it. Close out RAKBank, Emirates NBD or ENBD accounts after your final salary clears, not before. Cancel Etisalat/du contracts with proper paperwork - they can chase debts to India through credit bureaus. Get your kids' Tasdeeq attested for Indian school admissions.

EOSB, gratuity and what to do with the lump sum

EOSB is tax-free in the UAE and treated as gratuity in India - the first 20 lakh INR is tax-free here too. Move the money before you become an Indian tax resident in the new fiscal year and you have more flexibility. Returnees split the lump sum across NRE FD, mutual funds via NRO, and real estate. Talk to people who did it - not the bank's relationship manager.

Shipping from the UAE to India: fastest of any route

20-foot container Jebel Ali to Nhava Sheva or Chennai is 2-4k USD, 3-5 weeks. Faster and cheaper than US/UK/AUS - which is why so many UAE families ship more. Indian customs Transfer of Residence still applies. Furniture from the UAE survives Indian climate well; electronics need a voltage check.

Schools for UAE returnees: the April intake fits

Indian and CBSE Gulf schools follow the same April-March year, so the calendar shift is the smallest of any country in this list. Hand off the report card and TC, and most kids slot in. IB schools in metros are also a clean transfer for UAE IB families.

Country-specific planning

The topics that move the needle for returnees from here.

End-of-service benefits (EOSB)

EOSB depends on years of service and visa type. Limited contracts and unlimited contracts compute differently. Validate the gratuity calculation with HR in writing before resignation.

What you should do
  • Get a written EOSB estimate
  • Reconcile any unpaid leave or commission
  • Plan tax-efficient timing for the payout

UAE bank account planning

Most UAE banks require closure within a fixed window after visa cancellation. Outstanding credit card balances or personal loans can block your no-dues letter, which delays visa cancellation.

What you should do
  • List every UAE account, card and loan
  • Get no-dues letters from each bank
  • Plan EOSB inflow and final remittance

School TC and attestation

Indian schools usually ask for the UAE school TC attested by MoFA and the Indian embassy. Start the process at least 6 weeks before flying.

What you should do
  • Request TC in the format Indian schools accept
  • Complete MoFA + Indian embassy attestation
  • Carry digital and physical copies

Savings transfer to India

Avoid one-shot AED to INR remittances when rates move. Spread transfers across 2 to 4 months where possible. NRE accounts let you keep tax-free interest for the year of arrival.

What you should do
  • Open NRE and NRO before transfers
  • Use scheduled transfers, not lump sum
  • Track rates and fees per bank

Gold and assets planning

Indian customs sets duty-free limits on gold by gender and length of stay abroad. Bringing more requires paying customs duty on the excess.

What you should do
  • Document gold purchase invoices
  • Confirm current customs limits before flying
  • Plan jewellery vs investment-grade gold differently

Job and lifestyle transition

Comp drops are real and lifestyle costs are different. Most UAE returnees report a 6 to 12 month adjustment period for routine, weather and bureaucracy.

What you should do
  • Map first 3 months of monthly burn in India
  • Have 6 months runway if returning without a role
  • Pick a city with strong returnee community
