The Canada-to-India timeline, step by step

You do not need to do everything at once. Here is when each piece actually matters.

  1. T-9 months

    Investment review

Plan around the deemed disposition on departure.

  2. T-6 months

    NR73 decision

Confirm residency status with CRA if needed.

  3. T-3 months

    RRSP / TFSA map

Decide what stays, what gets liquidated.

  4. T-1 month

    Container booked

Provincial health card end date noted.

  5. Landing week

    Aadhaar, PAN, schools

Returnees share which queue to start with in your city.

  6. T+3 months

    Settle in

Treaty rules for RRSP withdrawals, kids in school.

The boring stuff that bites later

What you actually need to know

What Canadian returnees wish they had done 6 months earlier

Sort out your RRSP, TFSA and CPP positions. Becoming a non-resident triggers a deemed disposition on non-registered investments - plan around it. File NR73 if you want CRA to confirm your residency status. Health cards lapse once you leave the province for more than the allowed window.

RRSP, TFSA, CPP and the CRA exit

RRSP stays where it is and grows tax-deferred in Canada, but withdrawals once you are an Indian tax resident may be taxable in India under the treaty. TFSA loses its shine - India does not recognise the tax-free status. CPP can be claimed from abroad later. The departure tax (deemed disposition) is the part most people underestimate.

Shipping from Canada to India

20-foot container Vancouver/Toronto to Mumbai/Chennai is 5-8k CAD, 8-10 weeks. The Transfer of Residence concession applies. Winter clothing is almost worthless in most Indian cities - sell or donate before shipping.

Schools for Canadian returnees: clean IB transitions

Canadian provincial transcripts transition cleanest into IB and Cambridge schools in India. CBSE accepts them with bridging. Calendar gap is similar to Australia - Canadian school year ends June, Indian starts April or June, plan a transition term.

Country-specific planning

The topics that move the needle for returnees from here.

Departure tax awareness

Canada treats most assets as deemed-disposed at fair market value on the day you cease Canadian residency. This can trigger meaningful capital gains tax in your final return. Some assets (RRSP, certain pensions) are excluded.

What you should do
  • Get a departure-tax estimate early
  • Decide which assets to sell pre-departure
  • Confirm which assets are excluded

RRSP and TFSA considerations

RRSP can continue after you leave Canada and is generally respected by India for treaty purposes. TFSA loses its tax-free status once you become a non-resident and becomes taxable income in India.

What you should do
  • List RRSP and TFSA balances
  • Decide whether to keep RRSP invested
  • Wind down or convert TFSA before leaving
Talk to an expert (coming soon)

Canadian school transition

Canadian kids slot into IB or Cambridge most easily. CBSE / ICSE need adjustment for pace in maths. June intake aligns cleanest.

What you should do
  • Get year-to-grade mapping in writing
  • Request reports and reference letters
  • Plan a buffer term in India

Healthcare transition

Provincial coverage ends on residency change. India is private-first for most returnees. Get cover ready before pre-existing waits apply.

What you should do
  • Confirm provincial coverage end date
  • Get India cover effective from day one
  • Plan dental and optical before flying

Moving savings and assets

Spread CAD to INR transfers across 2 to 4 months. NRE keeps interest tax-free in your RNOR window. Ship household goods in one shipment to simplify customs.

What you should do
  • Open NRE and NRO before transfers
  • Get 2 to 3 shipping quotes
  • Photograph and inventory everything

OCI / citizenship-related planning

Canadian citizens can apply for OCI and live in India indefinitely. Renewals after major age milestones still apply for kids. Keep passport-OCI numbers aligned on renewal.

What you should do
  • Apply / update OCI for everyone
  • Track kid passport-OCI renewal cycles
  • Carry physical and digital OCI cards

Canada treats most of your assets as sold at fair market value on the day you cease Canadian residency. The resulting gains are taxed in your final Canadian return.
